Пандавы спаслись после инцидента в лаковом дворце, организованного их злыми кузенами — Кауравами во главе с Дурьодханой и его братом Душасаной, их дядей Шакуни и другом Дурьодханы Карной. Он помогает царю Панчалы Друпаде устроить сваямвару для его дочери Драупади, которая родилась из яджни. Третий принц из Пандавов, Арджуна, побеждает в сваямваре Драупади и женится на ней, однако обстоятельства вынуждают Драупади выйти замуж за всех пятерых Пандавов. Пандавы получают новое королевство Индрапрастха, расположенное далеко от Хастинапуры из-за конфликта с Кауравами
